Making money make sense for young creatives.

Bills and Beats is a financial education campaign and documentary series created by filmmaker Jin-Theng Craven. Focused on empowering Gen Z musicians and creatives, it explores how passion and money can coexist in the creative industries. With the support of UK Music and educational partners, the project needed a name, identity and campaign that would capture both the energy of youth culture and the seriousness of financial literacy.

Insight

Jin, a former banker turned filmmaker, wanted to tackle a problem she saw first-hand, talented young people entering creative industries without the financial knowledge to sustain their careers. As the mother of two Gen Z daughters, she listened closely to them and their friends, spending hours interviewing young musicians to understand what they were really struggling with.

That research revealed a clear gap: creatives could talk about music, but not money. The brand needed to start that conversation without sounding like a lecture.

Story The breakthrough came in finding a visual and tonal balance, the Brat reality meets the Barbie dream. Bold, energetic, unapologetic.

The name Bills and Beats captured the entire idea in three words. It was catchy, direct and perfectly framed the message that money and music belong in the same sentence. The identity used a mix of pop colour and cultural grit, pinks, greens and blacks inspired by gig posters and zine culture, layered with playful cutouts and financial symbols.

The campaign tone was conversational and creative: part documentary, part movement.

Engage We developed the name, descriptor, and visual identity, alongside presentation decks, campaign materials and a simple, scrollable website to support partners and outreach. Posters and social graphics carried the rallying cry: It’s all about the money. It’s all about the music.

By blending documentary storytelling with a music-magazine feel, the brand gave the topic of financial literacy emotional impact and cultural credibility.

Clarity

Bills and Beats is growing into more than a campaign, it’s now a community.

A regular event series in Leeds brings together young musicians, financial experts and educators to share knowledge, stories and resources. These sessions also generate new content for the documentary’s final act and for the digital platform, which now includes practical tools and educational materials to help creatives plan their future.
